It was during a school trip to a motor show and, like the other 30 boys from my school who queued up to have a go, I was mesmerised. Looking back, I think it was the highlight of the show for me. Half a century later, electric windows are taken for granted, as are remote locking, adaptive cruise control, satellite navigation and on- board tyre pressure sensors – all highly sophisticated and technically complex gadgetry, but today considered standard equipment on most vehicles.
