Uber Eats launches petition to change Canberra’s name

Uber Eats launched a petition, earlier this week, to change the name of our nation’s capital to CanBEERa, in recognition of the “wealth of craft breweries in the region”.

As a tribute to Canberra being a “hop spot” for local brewers, Uber Eats called on Australians to rally behind the petition to rename the city. They hoped to have delivered enough signatures to officially present it to Parliament by today’s National Beer Day.

Across Australia the craft beer industry has increased, on average, by 9.7% year on year, says Uber Eats.

“Despite its size, ACT is proving itself to be a strong contender in the industry, with nine of the top 100 craft beers coming from the state in 2022,” says the company.

The initiative coincides with the launch of Uber Eats alcohol delivery service, with Canberrans joining the rest of the east coast capitals in being able to order alcohol from local merchants through the app.

“When we discovered the incredible concentration of locally grown brewers in the capital, we thought what better way to help promote their craft nationally than by petitioning to rename the nation’s capital in their honour?” says Uber Eats ANZ Regional General Manager Retail Lucas Groeneveld.

“Goulburn might have the Big Merino and Coffs the Big Banana, but nobody has ever had a town named after their most popular export – why can’t CanBEERa be the first?

“We know beer is an increasingly popular choice on Uber Eats, having experienced double digit growth year on year. Beer now accounts for one in three orders from bottle shops on our platform, with two of the three most popular options being Australian made.”

In support of the petition, and to help even more Australians discover the country’s impressive array of small batch brewers, Uber Eats is launching a 30% off selected beer items at selected stores in the ACT, Queensland, Victoria and NSW.
