Mercato Centrale announces Australian launch date

Italian mega-market il Mercato Centrale will open the doors of its new Melbourne store on September 19. Revitalising the historic McPherson’s art-deco building at 546 Collins Street, the launch marks the first il Mercato Centrale outside of its home country of Italy.

Deeply rooted in tradition and culture, il Mercato Centrale will emulate the dynamics of a traditional Italian market square, promising an ever-evolving cultural hub, like its venues in Florence, Rome, Turin and Milan.

At the heart of il Mercato Centrale are 23 food and beverage artisans, chosen for their unique expertise and knowledge, and a deep passion for sharing their craft with people.

“Our venue will not only bring a cultural experience never-before seen in Melbourne, it will celebrate the rich tradition of Italian cuisine and hospitality through our dedicated food and beverage artisans,” said il Mercato Centrale General Manager Gary Patikkis.

“Ingrained in Melbourne’s cultural fibres is a passion for quality food and a boldness to try something new, which, combined with the significance of the McPherson building made Melbourne the obvious home for the first il Mercato Centrale outside of Italy.”

The heritage listed McPherson Building built in 1937 was chosen as the home of il Mercato Centrale Melbourne for its unique story and central location.

Conceptually designed by renowned architect Alberto Torsello, a strict methodology of integration with respect to traditional construction was central to all decisions, with exposed concrete and polished steel paying homage to its beginning as a hardware manufacturing factory.

The 3,500 metre square venue spans across three levels, creating Melbourne’s most concentrated artisanal food and beverage and cultural hub.
The ground level will feature an immersive and experiential market square with open kitchens where customers can closely observe the skills and craftsmanship of the artisans, including a specialty cheesemaker, patisserie, bakery, butcher, handmade pasta bar.

The first level will be home to casual and fine dining options, with the second level reserved for private events, artisan masterclasses and free community cultural events.

With a total standing capacity of 3000 people, each level of il Mercato Centrale will offers seating designed to facilitate authentic connections and the simplicity of sharing.
