Too Good To Go, the world’s “largest” marketplace for surplus food has announced its highly anticipated launch in Perth. After launching in Australia eight months ago, Too Good To Go now has more than 1300 partners around the country and is making a positive impact in surplus food waste reduction across three major cities.
In Australia, food waste remains a multi-billion dollar problem. Over 7.6 million tonnes of food is wasted annually, 70% of which is still edible. The Danish-born certified B-Corp launched its Australian operations in Melbourne in August 2024, followed shortly by Sydney. Both cities quickly embraced the opportunity to reduce surplus food waste while saving money.
Since its launch, Australian Too Good To Go users have saved over 325,000 meals.
The free mobile app allows users to purchase a Surprise Bag of food, that would have otherwise been thrown to waste, at a reduced price from a range of bakeries, cafes, restaurants, grocery stores and other food businesses.
Perth will now have access to a number of local favourites like Crumbs Patisserie, Adore Bakery and national brands like FoodCo’s Muffin Break and Jamaica, Sushi Sushi, and Roll’d, who have all joined the fight against food waste.
Joost Rietveld, Country Director of Australia said, “We’re thrilled to bring Too Good To Go to Western Australia, a state known for its incredible food scene and strong community values. With food waste being a growing issue, we’re excited to empower West Australians to take action and make a real difference.
“Our mission is to inspire everyone to fight food waste together, and the response across Australia has been incredible – with over half a million people already joining the movement. By launching in Perth, we’re taking another step toward our goal of helping halve Australia’s food waste by 2030. We’re building a dedicated local team to support our impact here, and have already had a positive response from businesses who are excited to join an established platform and benefit from our industry experience both locally and globally. We know Perth has the appetite to make a difference in this movement, and invite all businesses and locals to join us in saving delicious food, reducing waste and creating a more sustainable future.”
How the Too Good To Go App works:
- Find surplus food near you: Users search Too Good To Go’s Marketplace app for stores nearby that have surplus food available.
- Save a Surprise Bag: Users select a store, reserve a Surprise Bag, and pre-pay in the app.
- Pick up your food: Users arrive within the pick-up window that the store sets, show their in-app receipt and receive their Surprise Bag.
The Too Good To Go Surprise Bag leverages the unpredictability of surplus food and food waste by enabling businesses the flexibility to save any and all food at the end of the day. Too Good To Go’s success, both in Australia and globally, gives local businesses peace of mind. They can trust they are working with the most efficient systems in the space, with industry experts on hand to support their experience.
The Marketplace offers a win-win-win solution. Food businesses can generate income from stock that would otherwise go to waste. Too Good To Go app users enjoy quality food from great locations at a reduced price – a valuable option during the cost of living crisis. At the same time, this helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with food waste accounting for 10% of global emissions (WWF, 2024).
Richard Goodman, CEO at Foodco said, “At Foodco, sustainability is an evolving passion of our business, so we’re thrilled to be extending our work with Too Good To Go in Perth, building on our Sydney and Melbourne success! This partnership allows our surplus food from Perth favourites, Muffin Break and Jamaica Blue, a second chance – meaning more delicious eats for our customers and less waste for the planet.
“We know our Perth customers will love this, just as much as customers in Sydney and Melbourne have. We have a reliable and proven platform to make it happen. At Foodco, we’re committed to improving sustainability and advocating for socially responsible practices, and we’re proud to be part of a movement that helps food go further.”
“At Sushi Sushi, we’ve introduced a number of initiatives to prioritise sustainability while ensuring the sushi we make fresh, in-store daily, is enjoyed by as many people as possible. We’re proud to set sustainability benchmarks for the sushi category, and by extending our partnership with Too Good To Go across the country and into Perth, we are assuring our customers that every Sushi Sushi meal brings joy rather than contributing to waste,” explained Stephen Anders, CEO of Sushi Sushi.
“At Roll’d Vietnamese, we’re committed to making a positive impact on the planet. That’s why we’re proud to announce our new partnership with Too Good To Go, helping us cut down on surplus food waste across our stores. This initiative is enabling our Franchise Partners & Company operated stores to connect with a new audience, whilst also improving store profitability in waste management. We now have a new level of engagement at Roll’d with our consumers. Together, we’re rolling towards a more sustainable world,” said Jarrod Montigue, National Operations Manager, at Roll’d.
The Too Good To Go App already has over 100 million registered users in 19 countries, empowering everyone to save more than 400 million meals since 2016. Perth’s launch is an important marker in Too Good To Go’s third continental expansion, with other cities set to join the movement across Australia.
