Avocados offer awesome value

With millions of Australians stuck at home in lockdown, creating an Instagram-worthy breakfast, lunch or dinner that heroes the humble avocado has never been more affordable than it is right now.

Grocery comparison app Frugl has unveiled its “2021 Avocado Index” revealing that avocados are the cheapest they have been in more than 18 months.

Avocado prices dropped to as low as $1 in mid-2021. Currently, hass avocados at both Coles and Woolworths are sitting around the $1.50 mark.

“Frugl’s Avocado Index has found that we’ve been playing upwards of $5 right down to just $1 recently for the humble avocado and now is the time to put avocados back on the menu at home,” Frugl’s Managing Director & CEO Sean Smith says.

“With many restaurants and cafes coming in and out of lockdown over the past 18 months, our insights at Frugl demonstrate that the bumper harvest of Australian avocados being diverted to supermarkets has led to reduced prices for consumers to recreate their favourite meals at home.”

Australian avos

In June, Avocados Australia announced “excellent value avocadoes” were on the way thanks to a bumper harvest.

“In the next three months alone, there are going to be about 130 million avocados making their way to retail shelves around the country,” Avocados Australia CEO John Tyas said.

“Nationally, we’re expecting a bumper harvest all year, with our growers from North Queensland to Tasmania, from Western Australia to the east coast, picking 65% more than they did in the last 12 months.”

Australian-grown avocados are available all year round because of the climates of our various growing regions. The year starts in January with the last of the Western Australian summer avocados and moves to North Queensland, then down to Central Queensland, through the southern areas of Queensland and into northern and central NSW. From there, the harvest moves to Victorian and South Australian growing regions before finishing the year back over in WA.

Mr Tyas says all the growers in all regions would be focussed on delivering the best avocados they could the 2021.

“Given the abundance of avocados in 2021, there’s never been a better time to add an avo to your shopping basket, and treat yourself to a regular, healthy indulgence.”
