Australians’ love of heading out for breakfast is ingrained in our culture, yet new research from Australian Mushrooms reveals that 43% of Aussies believe the menu at their local cafe does not offer enough variety.[1]
Aussies are craving a menu refresh with 39% calling for their local cafe to update their menu every one to two months.
To help inspire Aussie cafes to change it up, Australian Mushrooms is partnering with internationally renowned chef Jason Roberts to encourage Aussies to order a fresh spin on a classic menu item when dining out and opt for Mushrooms on Toast.
Mr Roberts says, “Mushrooms are the ideal canvas for the ultimate breakfast, lending themselves to any flavour profile with their own unique earthiness. We’d love to see Aussies getting creative and experimenting with the Mighty Mushie to create new taste sensations.”
When it comes to brekkie options, the Mighty Mushie is certainly on cafe-goers’ minds, with nearly a quarter (24%) reporting they’d order mushrooms on toast if it were available over other popular breakfast dishes like bacon and egg which was ranked by 28% of Aussies as what they’re most likely to choose, closely followed by other menu favourite such as eggs on toast (52%).
The cafe setting has fast become a source of inspiration for Aussie food enthusiasts, with nearly three-quarters (74%) of Aussies who dine out for breakfast often stating they’re likely to be inspired by their local to recreate a menu item at home.
Australian Mushroom grower Georgia Beattie says, “We’re so fortunate to live in a place where we have such fresh produce readily available – both at home and when dining out. I’m proud to be one of the 40 plus Australian Mushroom growers in the country who supply both businesses and Aussies alike.”
To encourage Aussie cafés to hero mushrooms in more dishes, Australian Mushrooms is running a competition from September to October to determine the best #MyMushroomToast.
“I’m excited to see Aussie cafés flex their creativity and come up with some new and delicious variations of Mushrooms on Toast! Australian Mushrooms are flavoursome, versatile and have a firm texture. Mushrooms on Toast is also a dish that suits almost every diet for example vegan and vegetarian meaning, they’re truly the best ingredient for cafés to experiment with for the #MyMushroomToast competition”, Ms Beattie said.
Additionally, the cafe that creates the best mushrooms on toast dish to their menu will receive $10,000.
