Messina and Lee Kum Kee unveil gelato collaboration

Gelato Messina has teamed up with Asian sauce and condiment brand, Lee Kum Kee, to launch two bespoke gelato flavours.

Promoted as “never-before-tasted” gelato flavours, the new launch includes:

  • Caramel and soy sauce gelato with Premium Soy Sauce brownies
  • Coconut and kaffir lime gelato with peanut topping and Chiu Chow Style Chilli Oil peanut crisps

Premium Soy Sauce “shines” in the caramel and soy sauce gelato, adding a “layer of complexity” to the “decadent”, brownie chunks within the flavour. Lee Kum Kee’s Seasoned Soy Sauce “perfectly complements” Messina’s “signature” Dulce De Leche, giving the gelato a “smooth, rich” texture.

Chiu Chow Style Chilli oil is described as a “mainstay” in Cantonese cuisine, bringing a “flavour punch” to the coconut and kaffir lime gelato with peanut topping. Those who decide to try the gelato are urged to drizzle an extra helping of Chiu Chow Style Chilli Oil over the top for an “extra kick”.

Tailoring Asian flavours to Aussie tastebuds

Gelato Messina co-owner and Head Creative Chef Donato Toce says his team was thrilled to work with Lee Kum Kee’s vast range of Asian flavours and tailor them to Australian tastebuds.

“With over hundreds of different flavour profiles in Lee Kum Kee’s repertoire, it was a real challenge for us to narrow it down to our three starring sauces: Premium Soy Sauce, Seasoned Soy Sauce and Chiu Chow Style Chilli Oil,” he says.

“Nearly every Australian family will have a bottle of Lee Kum Kee Premium Soy Sauce in their pantry, so we wanted to play with it and stretch its capabilities. This flavour is about showing Aussies that Soy Sauce can be the star of any meal, be it entrée, main or dessert.

“Those who love a bit of heat won’t be able to resist an extra drizzle of Chiu Chow Style Chilli Oil on their scoop of coconut and kaffir lime gelato. This is all about marrying sugar and spice, pushing the flavour limits.”

Australians can try the new flavours for free on 15 February, exclusively available at pop-ups taking place in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane during Chinese New Year:
