Following the first detection of avian influenza on the 22 May 2024 at a poultry farm near Meredith, in the Golden Plains Shire, Victoria. More than one million birds have been culled as the virus has ravaged eight Victorian farms.
Victoria Chief Veterinary Officer Graeme Cooke says, “If this virus were allowed to spread further, it would be devastating for the rest of the poultry industry in Victoria and perhaps onward through Australia.” The avian influenza outbreak has been detected in Victoria, NSW, and the ACT leading to nationwide egg shortages.
Amidst this crisis, consumers are turning to alternatives, including Melbourne based, family-owned company Roma Food Products. The owner of the OrgraN brand has seen increase in interest towards its Easy Egg and No Egg Replacer, traditionally favoured by vegans and vegetarians as the go-to egg substitutes for baking and cooking. This shift reflects a broader trend, with these products gaining popularity among a more diverse audience.
Roma Food Products founder and Managing Director Max Buontempo considers that supply shortages are the driving forces behind the increased demand for their products as well as the increased costs of groceries including eggs. “With the current crisis affecting egg supplies, combined with the rising cost of living, we’re seeing more households willing to try our OrgraN Egg Replacer and Easy Egg product as a reliable, safe, and cost-effective solution,” Mr Buontempo said.
OrgraN attributes much of its success to the convenience and value offered by their No Egg™ product, which serves as a substitute for up to 66 eggs per pack. This product, designed for long-term storage, has a shelf life of 18 months and is free from cholesterol, gluten, dairy, soy, or any animal derivatives, making it a versatile option in today’s competitive market.
OrgraN’s success is not only limited to its No Egg product but extends to its Vegan Easy Egg™ as well.
“Both products are designed with convenience and long shelf life in mind, making them practical choices for households facing the challenges of the current egg shortages,” the company said. “While No Egg is valued for its versatility in baking and cooking, Vegan Easy Egg offers a more direct substitute for traditional eggs in various dishes, providing customers with multiple options to suit their needs.” It is made primarily from chickpea flour, which is rich in fibre, protein, and micronutrients. It has also earned global recognition, including the prestigious Gold Winner title at the ‘Free From’ Food Awards in London.
Since its launch in 1984, OrgraN has expanded to 70 international markets, establishing itself as a leader in allergen-free foods. Their products are available in Australia through Coles, selected independent retailers and exported to distributors worldwide.
