National Prawn Day, a day that celebrates Aussie Tiger Prawns, will be held on March 15. Established by seafood producer Tassal, the event is now in its fifth year, the day has become an Australian symbol of social connection.
Tassal’s consumer insights show that Aussies are changing their purchasing behaviour of prawns, enjoying 12,700 tonnes of prawns either at home or out and about this year.
While nearly three times more prawns are sold in December compared to any other month, Tassal shopper data reveals that the appetite for prawns is growing. More households include prawns in their everyday shop than ever before. Tassal is expecting these numbers to rise – not just during Christmas, but also at other key moments like Easter, when seafood is a popular choice for gatherings and celebrations.
Celebrity Bondi Chef and Tassal ambassador Guy Turland has a deep appreciation for Tassal Aussie Tiger Prawns.
“I could celebrate prawns all year round, but National Prawn Day is a day I like to get my family and friends together to really make the most of it,” he said.
He’s shared an easy-to-follow Tassal Aussie Tiger Prawn sandwich recipe to highlight how delicious Tassal Aussie Tiger Prawns are.
“If you love prawn toast, you’ll love this recipe! Perfect saucy or straight up,” he said.
For an even fancier option, try adding chimichurri, bloody Mary mayo or tartare prawn dipping sauces.
Dietitian Susie Burrell says Aussie Tiger Prawns are a low fat, nutrient-rich protein, packed with vitamins and minerals including selenium, vitamin E and vitamin B12.
To keep up with demand, Tassal expects to produce 151 million prawns this season. At a 15cm average length, laying these prawns end-to-end would stretch more than halfway around the Earth’s equator.
