What Aussies are putting on the table to enjoy finals frenzy

The East Coast is gearing up for two thrilling sporting finals – AFL and NRL this weekend.

ShopFully investigated what Australian shoppers in each state (Queensland, Victoria, NSW) have been searching for in the ShopFully app as they look to score bargains on grocery items in the lead-up to the big matches and found:

  • Finals are a special occasion calling for Aussies to enjoy lamb despite it being a higher ticket item, Victoria represents 39% of searches for ‘lamb chops’ followed closely by NSW at 37%.
  • The Sunshine State (Queensland) comes out on top as keen to put shrimp on the barbie, representing 39% of the searches for ‘prawns’, compared to just 32% in Victoria and 26% in NSW.
  • Snags aren’t a hot ticket BBQ feature this year, with search volume down in Victoria from 60% in 2022, to just 8% in 2023.
  • Hot chips are a must particularly in Victoria accounting for 70% of searches, followed by QLD at 57% and NSW at 39%.
  • No spread is complete without the dip and cracker combo, with ‘dips’ being most popular in Queensland representing 68% of searches, ahead of NSW at 42% and Victoria at 35%.
  • The one thing all states can agree on is crackers being a go-to, with Victoria searches at 29%, Queensland at 27% and NSW at 25%.
  • Searches for Cadbury chocolate have soared representing 66% of searches in Queensland, 63% in NSW and 61% in Victoria.

ShopFully Australia Country Manager Brendan Straw says: “It’s no secret grocery bills are up and impacting many Australian households, but that won’t stop footy fans from gathering with loved ones to host the biggest sporting events of the year.

“Across the country temperatures are warming up and what better opportunity than finals fever to enjoy a shrimp on the barbie. The cost of putting on a spread doesn’t have to set back Australians with major retailers offering sizzling deals for those BBQ essentials and party must-haves like a dip and cracker combo,” Mr Straw said.

“Consumers right now are looking for opportunities to do more with less, and browsing digital catalogues to plan meals around the best retailer offers is a hack to save cash at the register.”
