Foodworks was created in November 2004 as a result of the merger of Foodworks Supermarket Group ltd and Australian United Retailers.
February 2004 saw supermarkets trial electronic shelf labelling for the first time – a method of displaying prices on LCD displays that could easily be changed from the back office. Unfortunately, the technology resulted in minimal uptake and is still available only in a handful of stores.
