SPAR Supermarket Alexandra Headland on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has banned all plastic bags from the store as of September 1.
Store owners Bruce and Sue Luchterhand made the decision to remove all plastic bags well ahead of the state’s official ban, which will take effect from July 1 next year.
“It’s a courageous and bold move from Bruce and Sue Luchterhand to completely ban plastic bags in their store well ahead of the official date and I congratulate them on this initiative,” National Retail Association Manager for Industry Policy David Stout said.
“I encourage other retailers across the state to follow their lead and implement similar schemes in order to ensure that there is limited disruption to their business and their customers.
“SPAR Supermarket Alexandra Headland’s decision to go 100 per cent plastic-bag free from the beginning of September is proof that the industry is being proactive in providing environmentally friendly solutions to their customers.”
The store intends to charge $1 for recycled bags and to introduce fit-for-purpose brown-paper bags with handles.
“We’re here to make sure this transitionary period is as easy for the sector as possible, to find the best possible solutions for retailers, consumers and the environment,” Mr Stout said.
“We’re launching a website offering useful information and handy hints, including a list of single-use plastic-bag alternatives, to ensure both retailers and consumers are equally prepared for the transition.”
