Amazon opens new Perth site

Amazon Australia has opened its new $70 million fulfilment centre (FC) in Perth.

Located in the Jandakot Airport Commercial Precinct, the 20,000sqm site is more than double the size of Amazon’s previous Perth Airport FC, which it has replaced.

The FC has capacity to house more than three million items sold on Amazon.com.au, expanding Amazon’s storage capacity in Western Australia by 500%.

“We’re thrilled to open our new purpose-built fulfilment centre in Perth, investing further in the state to grow our footprint and provide quality job opportunities,” says Amazon Australia Country Manager Janet Menzies.

“Since we launched Amazon.com.au, we’ve been committed to offering customers great value, wide selection and fast delivery, and this new FC helps us deliver even more on this promise for customers in WA. Many Perth Prime members have already experienced next-day delivery on an Amazon order, and our investment in this site will increase the selection of items that can be shipped directly to local customers more quickly.

“We’re proud to support thousands of small-and-medium-sized Australian businesses, and the addition of this FC to our network provides even more opportunities for local businesses to better serve their customers in WA and around Australia.”

Disaster Relief Hub

The new site contains a Disaster Relief Hub, storing thousands of essential items including toiletry bags for adults and children, as well as clean-up kits.

This new Hub expands the capacity of Amazon’s Disaster Relief program in WA, following the launch of Amazon’s Disaster Relief Hub at its Perth logistics site in April.

In an emergency, Amazon’s non-profit partners Foodbank, Australian Red Cross and St Vincent de Paul Society can pick up the relief items and deliver them directly to affected communities, or Amazon can ship directly into disaster zones as required.

Sustainability

As part of Amazon’s commitment to be net-zero carbon across its business by 2040, the new building includes a number of energy efficiency features:

  • A 1.5MW solar panel system on the roof. Once operational, it’s expected to generate up to 80% of the site’s energy needs.
  • Automatic, water efficient sanitary fixtures and fittings to reduce mains water consumption.
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning is controlled by a building management system that ensures a comfortable working environment for employees at the same time as reducing unnecessary energy consumption.
  • LED lighting adjusts according to natural light availability and building occupancy, and indoor air quality is constantly monitored.

Local jobs

The Jandakot FC is home to more than 225 jobs. This includes 125 roles filled by existing team members who transferred from the previous site and more than 100 new local jobs for the local area.
