‘Eco snacking’ on the rise

Australia is experiencing a ‘snack evolution’ according to a new study, with a growing number of consumers seeking products that are good for their health as well as for the world.

The new ‘Snack it Good’ report released by YouGov and Fancy Plants – an Australian plant-based snack brand on a mission to encourage others to eat more plants – looks at the way Aussies’ eating habits have changed since the pandemic. It illustrates a strong trend towards a snack-based lifestyle that prioritises wellbeing for both humans and the planet.

It found:

  • 49% snacked more during lockdown last year
  • 50% started eating healthier to boost immunity
  • 56% actively sought out food and snacks with added nutrition
  • 89% are worried about the health of the planet
  • Aussie thinks about the wellbeing of the planet 3 times per week.

The research also found that the flexitarian lifestyle has truly gained momentum, with 35% eating more plant-based food now compared to three years ago, citing personal health (55%) and the planet’s health (48%) as motivation.

While Aussies’ appetite for plant-based foods is evident, it often falls through during snacking. 62% of flexitarians admit reaching for dairy-based snacks like a yoghurt pot or a chocolate bar when cravings hit.

Plant-based pioneer and Founder of Fancy Plants, John Foss, has listened to Aussies’ call for ‘good snacks’.

“Fancy Plants makes it fun and easy for people to eat plant-based,” he says, citing the company’s affordable range of Chia Pod, Rice Pud and Silky Pot products.

“We care deeply about both people and the planet and to do our part in lowering the environmental impact, we have partnered with 1% for the Planet where we give back 1% of our sales to support the planet.

“We hope to inspire people to join us on the plant side to improve our own health and the health of our planet,” says Mr Foss.
