Report reveals SA’s growth ambitions

The South Australian Food and Beverage Manufacturing Industry Census Report, released by Food South Australia (Food SA), shows a sector that is confident, innovative and globally minded, while continuing to face challenges in workforce, compliance and sustainability.

Conducted biennially, the Census provides valuable benchmarking data and insights that inform business decisions, guiding Food South Australia’s programs and support, and shaping advocacy to government.

The report – based on data collected from the 2023–2024 financial year – reveal 86% of businesses plan to expand domestically, while 54% are targeting international markets (up from 40% in 2020–21).

“Our food industry has always been globally minded but for the first time a majority of businesses are planning to target international markets,” said Food SA CEO, Tori Dixon Whittle.

“Global uncertainty has created opportunities, and South Australian businesses are already delivering impressive results.”

Key findings

The report also highlights a focus on premium, with 78% of businesses now targeting premium markets, compared with 68% in the previous Census.

Innovation is leading growth, with two-thirds of businesses having launched new products in the past year, and more than half intend to increase product development over the next two years.

Just over half (54%) of businesses are prioritising AI and emerging technologies, while 69% are aligned or working towards the 2030 Waste Reduction Targets.

Half of respondents reported turnover above $5 million (compared with 36% in 2020–21).

However businesses remain under pressure. Almost half of businesses are now spending over 20 days on audit compliance, and 60% of businesses struggle to attract staff, and 50% to retain them.

Vital industry

The Hon Clare Scriven, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, said SA’s food and beverage manufacturing industry plays a significant role in supporting the state’s economy.

“SA’s food and beverage manufacturing sector provided $2.1 billion of gross value to the economy and continues to support growth in employment, exports and regional development,” she said.

“The strong confidence across the sector, as highlighted in the Census, is a testament to the industry, its resilience and determination to address challenges. The State Government remains committed to collaborating with the industry and peak bodies to support ongoing growth and sustainability across the sector.”

Ms Dixon-Whittle says SA’s food and beverage industry is demonstrating bold ambition and a future-focused outlook, even as it grapples with significant challenges that demand collaborative solutions.

“The Census highlights the real pressures around workforce, compliance, and sustainability that need targeted support,” she said.

“These insights are vital for shaping the programs, support and advocacy work we do on behalf of industry to ensure long-term competitiveness and growth.”
