SecondBite announces inaugural ‘No Food Waste Challenge’

SecondBite is encouraging Australians to get creative in the reduction and/or elimination of their food waste next month, announcing the 21-day ‘No Food Waste Challenge’.

During the inaugural event, participants will be asked to reduce or eliminate their food waste, use up all their leftovers and start conversations with family, friends, and colleagues to all “do their bit” to support better environmental outcomes and look after our hip pocket.

“In the past 12 months, over two million households in Australia have experienced severe food insecurity and on any given day, over half a million households are struggling to meet their food needs. At SecondBite, we’re committed to helping those who may need support at any given time,” says SecondBite co-founder Simone Carson AM.

“The No Food Waste Challenge will support our food rescue programs so we can continue to reduce food insecurity and hunger, and address critical social, environmental and economic challenges that come from food waste and excess packaging. Even small changes can make a large impact on how much personal food waste we all produce.”

Ready to support those participating in the challenge is TV presenter, author and former Masterchef finalist Courtney Roulston, who is also a SecondBite ambassador. Growing up on a small farm in Kellyville, NSW, Ms Roulston says she loved experimenting with home cooking and, as the youngest of six, learnt early on how to get creative with not only fresh ingredients but leftovers to keep hungry mouths fed.

“Knowing how to use leftover ingredients from a recipe to create another meal can be hard and unfortunately, many people avoid doing it for that reason,” she says. “But that’s what I love about cooking – it gives you the opportunity to be creative and test out new flavour combinations while finding alternative ways to use ingredients, so they don’t end up in the bin.

“The No Food Waste Challenge is a great way for those who have been considering how they can change their waste habits to kick-start their journey all while doing it for a good cause that will help others.”

Individuals, families, teams and corporate companies can sign up and share their food waste minimisation tips and hacks as part of the SecondBite No Food Waste Challenge which runs 8-29 September. Find out more here.
