IGA has released its ‘Taste of Summer’ research that identifies Aussies favourite Christmas food, and the winner is the classic leg of ham!

The information conducted by YouGov and commissioned by IGA as part of IGA’s Christmas Aisle Index Report to uncover Aussie Christmas food habits and trends, found that nearly half of Aussies will have a traditional leg of ham at Christmas.

The top 10 most popular Christmas foods include:

  1. Smoked ham/leg of ham – 43%
  2. Fresh seafood – 28%
  3. Christmas cake/pudding – 26%
  4. Baked vegetables – 22%
  5. Salad – 22%
  6. Fresh fruit – 21%
  7. Roast pork – 21%
  8. Chocolate – 20%
  9. Pavlova – 18%
  10. Potato salad – 15%

“The iconic ham has always held a special spot on Aussie’s Christmas tables, IGA’s award winning ham flies off the shelves, so it’s no surprise to see it come out on top as the most popular Christmas food,” says IGA retailer and Chair of the IGA National Retailer Council, Joseph Romeo.

“Like so many Australians I am looking forward to spending more quality time with my family around the dining table this Christmas, and across the country 1400 independent family-owned IGA stores are working tirelessly to make sure the locals can get everything they need at their IGA without the added stress that comes with the festive season.”

Other Aussie Christmas trends

Australians are set to enjoy multiple cuisines this year. The findings show that cuisines include:

  • Australian – 51%
  • British – 16%
  • Italian – 14%
  • Chinese 10%
