SPAR Australia helps to ‘Shout a Mate’

On November 15, SPAR Australia held a fundraising day at all SPAR, SPAR Express and 5 STAR stores to raise ‘shouts’ for nights out for those in the bush affected by the ongoing drought.

Funds raised will help bring mental and social respite to drought-affected communities by bringing entertainment and comedic relief to those who need it most.

When SPAR Australia heard about ‘Shout a Mate’ from ambassador, comedian and actor Bruno Lucia at its recent trade show, they set about developing the framework of a program to support the cause.

A number of SPAR Australia retailers are in drought-stricken areas and SPAR called on all of its retailers and their customers to rise to the challenge and make a coordinated effort on November 15. The plan was to raise funds at store level to enable the ‘Rock & Roll Comedy Roadshow’, together with Bruno Lucia, to put on shows in approximately 16 of the drought-stricken locations.

Each contributing store was given a ‘sister area’ to create a personal connection between the benefiting community and the stores and communities that raised the funds to make the events possible.

‘Shout a Mate’ founder and spokeswoman Anita Donlon is overwhelmed by the attention the cause has received.

“Our rural and outback communities need the same mental and social respite as us ‘city dwellers’, even more so in the case of those living in remote communities and not having access to a great night out so everyone can come together,” she said. “To see communities come together for a good old laugh is truly a pleasure.”
