ALDI, Coles and Woolworths were among the winners at last week’s 2025 Sustainable Seafood Awards.
The independently judged awards, presented by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), were announced on Thursday (6 March) at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay.
ALDI received three awards from the ASC, with these being Best Responsible Seafood Retailer, Aquaculture Champion and Best Responsible Seafood Trader.
ALDI Australia Director of National Sustainability Daniel Baker says these wins are a fantastic endorsement of the work the retailer is doing to make sustainable seafood choices more accessible for all Australians.
“To win three ASC awards, including the Best Responsible Retailer for the third year in a row, reflects the effort and commitment of our team to work with globally recognised certification bodies to source seafood products responsibly,” he says.
“We’re proud to offer everyday value on our fish and seafood products without compromising on taste, quality or the planet. This means ALDI customers can be confident they’re making a good difference every time they shop with us.”
Coles, on the other hand, was awarded the MSC’s Best Sustainable Seafood Supermarket and Best Sustainable Seafood Product.
Regarding the retailer’s efforts, the judging panel commends Coles for its dedication to sustainability, particularly its efforts in sourcing sustainable tuna supplies.
“Commitments from large retailers are essential to making sustainable practices the benchmark for tuna fishing policies and operations,” notes the panel.
Judges also praise Coles’ development of MSC labelled own-brand products, calling it “a breakthrough in the pursuit of sustainable seafood production worldwide”.
