Tasmania’s Recycle Rewards program has announced that close to 10 million eligible containers have been returned to its Launceston Depot.

Tasmanian Acting Premier and Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Guy Barnett, says the milestone highlights how the container refund scheme is delivering benefits for both the environment and the community.

“Recycle Rewards has been incredibly successful for Tasmania, with more than 145 million containers returned since the scheme commenced last year,” he says.

“The scheme has not only halved container litter, but it has created more than 60 local jobs across Tasmania, many of them through social enterprises like the Launceston Depot.

“Operator City Mission is generating additional revenue helping to fund frontline services for vulnerable Tasmanians experiencing hardship.

“Every bottle, can and carton returned is helping support people who need it most, whether it be through crisis accommodation, emergency relief assistance or community kitchens.”

Over $400,000 of refunds have been donated to a variety of charities including City Mission.

“Recycle Rewards is helping organisations like City Mission create jobs, support vulnerable Tasmanians and deliver lasting community benefits,” says Mr Barnett.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is continuing to deliver practical action to reduce litter, increase recycling and support stronger communities across Tasmania.”
