Western Star is celebrating 100 years of Australian butter making this month.
Born in Victoria’s Western Districts in 1926, the brand has grown from its regional beginnings into one of Australia’s most recognised dairy brands. Western Star is the number one chilled spreads brand in Australia, with a pack purchased every second and products purchased by nearly one in two surveyed Australian households each year (Nielsen IQ Spreads Grocery Scan, 52 weeks to 1/9/26).
For Western Star, its centenary is promoted as an opportunity to highlight the craftsmanship, dedication, and people that have helped the brand endure across generations. Australian made in Cobden, Victoria, the brand says it continues to be shaped by local farmers and butter makers.
Lactalis-Mainland Dairy Oceania Managing Director David Breckenridge says reaching 100 years is a proud milestone for a brand that has continued to earn its place in Australian kitchens.
“Very few brands have the privilege of being part of Australian households for 100 years,” he says.
“Western Star has built that trust through generations of craftsmanship, consistency, and the expertise that goes into every block and tub. As we mark this milestone, we’re proud of the legacy behind the brand and are focused on ensuring it continues to be loved by future generations.”
Throughout its history, that commitment to quality continues to be recognised today, with Western Star being named Australian Champion Butter eight times, and receiving multiple gold medals at both the 2026 Victorian and Australian Dairy Industry Association (DIAA) Awards, including the trophy for Highest Scoring Consumer Pack Butter.
As part of its birthday celebrations, Western Star says it’s giving back to the Australians who have supported the brand for generations. Through a national promotion, running until October, consumers who purchase participating products and enter online can go into the draw to win “thousands” of prizes, including grocery eGift cards.
