Woolworths accepts China’s UnionPay debit and credit cards

Woolworths now accepts UnionPay debit and credit cards across selected supermarkets, benefiting thousands of Chinese holders of UnionPay cards in Australia.

With more than six billion cards issued around the world, the Chinese financial services corporation has the world’s largest holder base.

Woolworths offers EMV chip payments for UnionPay cardholders, as well as UnionPay’s contactless and mobile payment services, known as QuickPass. Woolworths will roll out UnionPay facilities to other Woolworths Group brands, such as Dan Murphy’s and Big W, in the near future.

“Last year, the number of Chinese visitors to Australia surpassed one million for the first time,” said Woolworths’ Head of Digital and Payments Paul Monnington. “This partnership with UnionPay International will make it easier and more convenient for UnionPay cardholders to visit one of our stores.”

Woolworths is the largest retailer in Australia to accept UnionPay cards.
