Points are in the bag for Woolies and Coles customers

Customers who bring their own reusable bags when shopping at Woolworths or Coles will earn bonus points for their eco efforts via the supermarkets respective loyalty programs.

Woolworths customers will earn two Rewards points for every shopping bag they bring with them to use in-store – for up to 30 bags and a maximum of 60 Rewards points. The offer applies whether the bags are Woolworths-branded reusable bags, those of other supermarkets, or the customers’ own. The Rewards offer began at the weekend and will continue until December 31, 2018 in Woolworths supermarkets and Metro stores.

Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci said, “We know the majority of our customers across Australia have embraced the move to a more sustainable way of shopping since we phased out single-use plastic bags. We want to thank customers and our store teams for their support during this change.

“We appreciate forming new habits is an adjustment for some of our customers. Our recent complimentary bag offer was aimed at providing a little extra help during the transition. We believe now is the time to encourage and reinforce greener habits. We hope this Rewards recognition will act as a further prompt for all customers to bring their own bags when shopping with us.”

To ensure customers receive the right Rewards points, store teams will ask them if they have brought their own bags when they get to the checkout. The team member will then enter the number of bags to ensure customers are allocated the correct points.

“We’re proud to be working with customers to take 3.2 billion single-use plastic bags out of circulation every year for the benefit of our waterways, oceans and marine life,” ,” Mr Banducci said.

Coles announced last week that shoppers bringing their own bags when shopping at Coles supermarkets nationally would earn 30 flybuys points (once per day) by swiping their flybuys card at the checkout. Following a strong response from customers, the offer will continue until July 31.

Coles Chief Operating Officer Greg Davis said, “Every day, we have more customers bringing their own bags when they shop at Coles, and we wanted to say thank you for making the switch from single-use to reusable bags.

“Customers have told us they think the flybuys points offer is a great idea, so we’ve decided to extend it until the end of the month to make sure everybody has a chance to use it.”

The offer of 30 flybuys points is available to shoppers who do not buy a new bag or take a complimentary Better Bag when shopping at Coles Supermarkets until stores close on July 31.
