Coles and Optus launch prepaid mobile plans

The Coles Prepaid $10 for 10 days mobile plan, promoted as being designed to help Australian families manage their mobile spend, offers unlimited standard national talk and text within Australia and 400mb of data on the Optus 4G Plus network.

Coles General Manager Non-Food Karin Zimmerman says customers are looking for prepaid options to assist in managing tight budgets, and they enjoy the simplicity and freedom of no commitments or contracts.

“We’re excited we can offer options on the Optus network for budget-conscious shoppers, such as mums managing mobile plans for the whole family,” she said. “With a plan that costs as little as a dollar a day, this is another way we can help our customers control their costs week to week.”

Coles will also introduce a $10 Pay As You Go plan with a 60-day expiry, which includes standard national calls within Australia for 12¢ per minute, 12¢ per standard national text (per 160 characters) and MMS, and 12¢ per megabyte of data (charged in per-kilobyte increments).

The retailer says the $10 Pay As You Go pricing plan supports customers’ needs for a low-cost recharge option with a long expiry.

Online retailer Kogan also announced a mobile offer this week, partnering with Vodafone. The announcement comes two years after Kogan’s bargain mobile service was terminated following the collapse of Telstra reseller ispONE.

Kogan Mobile Executive Director David Shafer said the company’s direct relationship with Vodafone meant consumers were the winners.

“This time, Kogan Mobile has cut out the middlemen in a direct deal with Vodafone, which means we can pass on savings to customers, whose service will be reliably delivered by Vodafone,” he said. “We now have a network ally who is really supporting us, isn’t scared of competitive pricing, and has an interest in seeing Kogan Mobile succeed in the market.”

Earlier this year, Woolworths launched a mobile service in partnership with Telstra, following in the footsteps of ALDI, which launched the ALDI mobile service in 2013.
