Employers consider tech as Payday Super begins

Payday Super is prompting a technology shift across Australian workplaces, according to Rest Super, with employers looking to automation and payroll upgrades to manage more frequent super payments and reduce administration.

New research commissioned by Rest ahead of the 1 July transition to Payday Super found more than one in four surveyed businesses (27%) expected to invest in new payroll or superannuation technology to prepare for the change, while a further 16% planned to automate super processing through payroll software or clearing house solutions. Almost one-third (32%) of employers were already spending more than 11 hours each month managing their super obligations.

Rest Chief Member Officer Simone Van Veen says the findings highlight the practical shift many employers expected to make in line with Payday Super.

“Now that Payday Super is live, we’re seeing businesses move from planning to action. Many employers are focused on reducing administration, improving efficiency and giving payroll teams confidence they’re meeting their obligations,” she says.

“Technology and automation can help employers manage more frequent super payments without adding unnecessary complexity to their daily operations.”

Taking action with Rest Pay

Early data from Rest suggests some businesses are already putting those plans into action.

More than 10,000 employers have registered to use Rest Pay, Rest’s clearing house solution built for Payday Super.

Rest Pay helps employers manage super payments and adapt to more frequent contribution cycles under Payday Super. It’s designed to simplify super administration and reduce manual processes associated with making contributions.

Employer contribution activity on Rest Pay has doubled following the transition to Payday Super, with more than 400,000 working Australians now having their super contributions processed through the platform.

Ms Van Veen says supporting employers through the transition will help Payday Super deliver its intended benefits for working Australians.

“Rest has long supported the Payday Super reform as it helps ensure Australians receive their super sooner and provides greater visibility that contributions are being paid as expected,” she says.

“At the same time, employers need practical tools and support to help them manage the transition with confidence. Rest Pay is designed to make more frequent super payments simpler as Payday Super becomes part of everyday operations.”
