Melrose Park’s transformation from a run-down industrial precinct into one of Sydney’s thriving new communities reached an important milestone on 29 August with the official opening celebrations for Melrose Central.
The landmark mixed-use development at 33 Hope Street is the centrepiece of the Melrose Park Urban Renewal Precinct and will provide a major new shopping, dining, health and entertainment destination for residents across Melrose Park and surrounding suburbs.
Spanning approximately 30,000 square metres across four levels, Melrose Central will ultimately accommodate around 100 retailers and service providers. Melrose Central was officially opened by the NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully.
It is expected that the completed commercial and retail centre will support approximately 1,200 permanent jobs.
The centre is anchored by a new 4,000 square metre Coles supermarket and includes Dan Murphy’s, TerryWhite Chemmart, Myhealth Medical Centre, World Gym, iPlay, Koorong Books and a wide range of specialty retailers, cafés and restaurants including the hugely popular HomeTown Asian Hawker-style eatery.
Deicorp CEO Fouad Deiri OAM said Melrose Central will transform the new suburb into a vibrant destination for visitors from near and far.
“Melrose Central is much more than a shopping centre, it is the new heart of Melrose Park and a place where people can shop, dine, access essential services and come together as a community,” Mr Deiri said.
“For the first time, local residents will have a major retail, dining, health and entertainment destination on their doorstep, without needing to travel to Parramatta, Top Ryde or other surrounding centres for a comparable range of services.
“This is an important milestone in the transformation of Melrose Park from its industrial past into a vibrant, connected and highly liveable urban community.”
The broader approved Melrose Central development comprises a four-storey retail podium and six residential towers ranging from six to 24 storeys, containing 494 apartments.
Mr Deiri said the development would deliver substantial and lasting economic benefits for the wider area.
“Melrose Central supported over 3,400 jobs during construction and will create another 1,200 permanent jobs in retail and local services. With a huge range of dining, convenience and services, everything locals need is now right on their doorstep,” he said.
“It will also serve Ermington, Meadowbank, West Ryde and nearby communities, making Melrose Park a destination in its own right.” “We are proud to deliver a development that combines new homes with employment, shopping, health services, dining and entertainment in one connected location.”
The new Coles supermarket opened on 8 July, creating more than 90 jobs and bringing a full-line supermarket to Melrose Park. Saturday’s opening begins an eight-day program of free entertainment, activities, retailer offers and giveaways.
Mr Deiri said the opening would give the community an opportunity to experience the scale and diversity of the new centre.
“Saturday’s opening celebration marked a new chapter for Melrose Park,” he said.
“We look forward to welcoming local residents and visitors and seeing Melrose Central become an important part of everyday community life.”
