Nespresso launches Doorstep Collection for coffee capsule recycling in Sydney

Nespresso Australia has launched Doorstep Collection, a new recycling service making it even easier for coffee consumers to recycle their used coffee capsules.

Launching officially as a pilot program, Doorstep Collection allows Nespresso customers to return their used aluminium coffee capsules for recycling directly from their home or another nominated location. Metropolitan Sydney will be the first area to access the service, with plans to expand to other locations across Australia in the future.

“As a certified B Corp and long-standing leader in capsule recycling, Nespresso continues to invest in solutions that make it easier for coffee lovers to recycle,” says the brand. The Doorstep Collection service is partially subsidised by Nespresso to ensure affordability and builds on Nespresso’s existing recycling program, extending the ways to participate from four channels to five.

“At Nespresso, we know from our customer research that convenience is a key driver of capsule recycling participation – and Doorstep Collection offers exactly that,” said Stefan Vermeulen, Managing Director of Nespresso Australia and New Zealand. “The introduction of this service now means there are five ways to get involved in our recycling program, giving more choice to our community.”

How Doorstep Collection works

Customers can purchase a Doorstep Collection Bag that can hold up to 180 Original capsules or 90 Vertuo capsules for a subsidised fee of $5 when placing a coffee order. Once full, the bag can be sealed and a collection arranged through the Nespresso App. Customers then leave the bag in their nominated collection location, and it will be collected for recycling.

Once returned, the capsules are transported to a recycling facility in Tomago, NSW, where the aluminium and coffee grounds are separated to go onto a second life. The aluminium is returned to the aluminium industry to be transformed into new products, while the coffee grounds are repurposed into compost and used in various applications such as fertilisers and soil conditioners.

Continuing to expand recycling access

Doorstep Collection complements Nespresso’s existing recycling options, which include Nespresso Boutiques, participating public collection points, private bulk collection points and Australia Post returns. The Sydney pilot will help Nespresso gather customer insights and refine the service experience ahead of a broader rollout.
