Plastic-free cuppa tea

Queensland-based Nerada Tea is encouraging Australians to improve their environmental footprint during Plastic Free July by opting for their loose-leaf tea.

Proudly Australian grown on a 360-hectare plantation in the Atherton Tablelands, the Nerada loose-leaf black tea (RRP $3.30) is Australia’s number one selling loose-leaf tea (Nielsen 31/5/21). Produced in a recycled cardboard box with a convenient pop-out pour spout, the packaging is 100% plastic free with no inner liner or external wrapping.

Nerada also makes a 125g loose leaf range sold in independent grocery stores which includes Australian Breakfast with Lemon myrtle, Loose-Leaf Royal Devonshire with Smooth Vanilla and Loose-lead Earl Grey with Aromatic Bergamot.

Nerada is also trialling a 100% plastic free paper for its tagless pot bags. These are expected to be introduced across the entire range by the end of 2021. Ongoing trials for plastic free solutions for tea bags are also a high priority and expected to be introduced in the next 12 months.

Celebrating 50 years of the Nerada brand this year, Nerada is committed to minimising its own environmental footprint, with the 360-hectare tea plantation receiving Rainforest Alliance Certification for meeting rigorous environmental standards – the only Australian agricultural entity to have been awarded such a certification.  The plantation is also 100% pesticide-free and proudly boasts Australia’s freshest cup of tea, from crop to cup in a matter of weeks.

Since its inception in 2010, Plastic Free July has inspired over 326 million participants in 177 countries. The 2020 Plastic Free Foundation Impact Report noted that Plastic Free July participants:

  • reduce their household waste and recycling by 21kg per person per year (almost 5%)
  • contribute to a total saving of 940 million kilos of plastic waste each year
  • are likely (8.5 out of 10) to maintain the changes they adopted as a way of life.
