CHOICE’s latest supermarket survey has found prices have risen at all four supermarkets – ALDI, Woolworths, Coles and IGA – since the consumer advocacy group’s last survey was released in June.Â
Fieldworkers priced groceries at 104 supermarkets – 27 Woolworths, 27 Coles, 23 Aldi and 27 IGA stores – in 27 locations across Australia in June 2026.
The survey found prices for the base basket of eight items without specials rose the most at IGA (up 11% on the previous survey) followed by ALDI (up 8%).
Base basket spend on the rise
CHOICE’s base basket of items contains apples, bananas, strawberries, potatoes, avocado, milk, basmati rice and beef mince.
The latest prices at each retailer were:
- IGA – $50.42 (up 11%)
- ALDI – $40.10 (up 8%)
- Coles – $42.54 (up 6%)
- Woolworths – $40.95 (up 2%)
The cost of healthy eating
In addition to the base basket of items, CHOICE also surveyed a spotlight basket of items shoppers may purchase if they’re on a healthy eating kick.
The basket included baby spinach, broccoli, carrots, chicken breast, corn thins, greek-style yoghurt, hommus, tinned chickpeas and rolled oats.
Excluding specials, ALDI provided the best value for the basket of healthy products, costing $28.79. At Woolworths, the basket cost $33.52, while Coles came in at $34.25. IGA’s basket was the most expensive at $42.27.
Cost of living concerns
Australians continue to express concern about the cost of food and groceries. In CHOICE’s most recent Consumer Pulse survey, conducted in June of 2026, 82% of of those surveyed said this cost is a major pressure on household budgets.
While this figure has fallen from a high of 88% in March, the latest basket data shows that people are paying more for basic items.
