Share sunshine safely this summer

Media Release

October, 2020

Golden Circle® together with Surf Life Saving Australia are bringing the fun and sunshine back to 2020 with the launch of Sunny Saviours, to celebrate local Aussie heroes who have made a positive difference to their community.

In what has been a challenging year, the Sunny Saviours program has identified Surf Life Saving Australia members who have not only helped save lives but have brightened the lives of people around them simply by sharing a little sunshine.

One of the Sunny Saviours, Lockie Cooke, has been through a lot over the years. After an injury which ended his kayaking career, Lockie turned to Surf Life Saving and was awarded coach of the year at North Cottesloe SLSC in WA in 2016. He moved to Sydney and joined North Bondi SLSC two years ago and says the surf clubs offered a stable social foundation to go to and feel part of a community no matter where he is in Australia. He’s even created a mobile app promoting peer support and social connection, called iYarn.

Each Sunny Saviour has been honoured by being projected onto the walls of the iconic North Bondi Life Saving Surf Club and will be profiled on the Golden Circle® social channels in the coming weeks between now and the Sunniest Day of the Year, 21 December.

“What better way to finish off what has been a tougher than usual year for most, than by celebrating those people who create moments of fun, happiness and positivity amongst Aussie family and friends, no matter how big or small.” said Sachin Rajpal, Head of Marketing-Beverages at Kraft Heinz ANZ.

To ensure everyone gets to enjoy the sun and the sand safely this summer, Surf Life Saving Australia and Golden Circle® have released a Share Sunshine Safely checklist.

“55% of drownings on the coast last year occurred more than 5km away from a lifesaving service. This summer, we are asking Aussies to STOP before rushing in and check for rip currents, LOOK for other dangers and a patrolled location, and PLAN to stay safe and know your limitations and swim between the red and yellow flags. Additionally, we’re asking beachgoers to practice social distancing and to stay at home if you feel unwell. By ticking items off our Share Sunshine Safely checklist and working together we can keep our beaches open and enjoy them safely this year,” said Shane Daw, General Manager Coastal Safety, Surf Life Saving Australia.

As part of their commitment to the community and Surf Life Saving Australia, a $50,000 donation will be provided on behalf of Golden Circle® from Kraft Heinz Australia. The donation will support Surf Life Saving Australia to continue providing vital lifesaving services to the community during the upcoming summer season.

Australians are encouraged to get involved and join the world’s largest volunteer movement by joining a Club, there is a role for everyone, visit sls.com.au/join or to make a donation to support our life saving services, visit sls.com.au.
