State of Origin veteran fronts State of Origin – Always respect, always DrinkWise campaign

With State of Origin Game 1 approaching at Accor Stadium, DrinkWise has partnered with National Rugby League (NRL) legend Michael Ennis to encourage moderation and respect to help ensure fans can enjoy the atmosphere and action of Origin.

Supported by the NSW Government, NSW Police Force, NRL, support services including 1800RESPECT, No to Violence – Men’s Referral Service and 13YARN, the campaign reinforces the importance of looking out for one another and creating a safe, respectful environment for all fans – whether they’re watching from the stadium, at home or with friends at the pub.

Michael Ennis, NRL Premiership winner and State of Origin veteran with eight appearances across four series for New South Wales, is backing DrinkWise’s call for fans to embrace respectful behaviour and moderate if drinking, reminding supporters that the enjoyment of Origin comes from sharing the experience the right way with fellow fans.

“Origin brings out the passion like nothing else – the anticipation, the big moments and the feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s one of those occasions that brings people together, whether you’re at the ground, at the pub or watching from the couch with family and friends. That’s why it’s important we all play our part in creating a positive atmosphere. Look out for your mates, respect those around you and if you’re choosing to drink, make sure you do it responsibly so the focus stays where it should – on enjoying a great game of footy,” said Mr Ennis.

DrinkWise research shows NRL fans overwhelmingly understand that the sport needs to remain the focus, with 94% believing it is important that people drink responsibly at sporting events. Further reinforcing this, 92% agree excessive drinking can take away from the enjoyment of a sporting event, highlighting the importance fans place on creating a positive and respectful atmosphere*

At the same time, 85% of fans say having a drink or two is part of Australian culture, reinforcing the importance of ongoing education around moderation throughout the State of Origin series.

DrinkWise Chief Executive Officer Simon Strahan said: “The campaign is about reminding fans to enjoy State of Origin by creating a positive experience for everyone.

“The passion and excitement are what make Origin special, but it’s also important to respect everyone around you and to moderate if choosing to have a drink. Whether you’re at the stadium, at a licensed venue or watching from home, the message is simple – enjoy the game and help make it a great experience for everyone.”

New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said: “Keeping the community safe remains a priority during major sporting events like State of Origin.

“NSW Police will have a strong presence at the stadium, on surrounding roads and across local communities to help fans enjoy the occasion safely and respectfully. The Always respect, always DrinkWise campaign is a reminder to enjoy the atmosphere responsibly and plan ahead. If you’re choosing to drink, do so in moderation and organise a safe way home, whether that’s public transport or a designated driver.”

Across the AMPOL State of Origin 2026 series, the Always respect, always DrinkWise message will be delivered across geo-targeted social media, in-venue messaging and alcohol retailers including Coles Liquor, Endeavour Group and Retail Drinks Australia members. The campaign will also be supported by ClubsNSW and other New South Wales venue operators.
